The MJLC condemns in the strongest possible terms the islamophobic attacks and violent anti-Muslim riots currently occurring in the UK. Mosques, minority groups, and asylum seekers have been the primary targets of the rioters creating a greater sense of insecurity and marginalisation for groups already being targeted due to years of persistent anti-Muslim, anti-migrant, and racist misinformation which have been spread and amplified by far right organisations. There is no place in a pluralistic democratic society for such hateful violence. This is a clear wakeup call that unless misinformation and hate speech are actively countered then physical violence against the targets of hatred will only increase.

We applaud the strong response from the UK government to bring the riots to an end and ensure accountability for those responsible. We would like to express our respect and gratitude for law enforcement personnel who have been putting themselves at risk to contain the violence, many of whom have been injured while performing their duties, their heroism and selflessness should not be overlooked. We are also inspired by the efforts of community members in affected areas coming together to help those who have been affected by the violence and stand up for their neighbours. This encouraging response shows that a brighter future is possible.
