Nostra Aetate 4

MJLC delegates participated in Rome at the International event organized by the community of Saint Egidio. MJLC co-chair rabbi Goldschmidt presented a doctrinal teaching on the ways for Peace in the plenary opening ceremony. Guest of honour was shaykh al-Azhar the grand imam from Cairo Ahmed al-Tayyeb. Religious leaders and representatives from all the world joined after two days of meetings and debates at the Colosseum for a prayer of hope. The Muslim delegation included Imam Yahya Pallavicini, Suaad Onniselka, Mufti Poric, Imam Said Faid, President of Strasbourg Central Mosque Said Aalla, and Imam Mustafic. From the Jewish side, MJLC Co-chair Rabbi Goldschmidt, Rabbi Ahrens, Rabbi Apel and Gady Gronich attended the meetings.

Rabbi Ahrens shared the following statement on the meetings:

"The celebrations for the 60th anniversary of Nostra Aetate in Rome was a mixed experience. On the one hand it was overshadowed by controversial remarks, which show how much more dialogue and mutual learning is necessary. On the other hand the clear rejection of any form of antisemitism by Pope Leo was an important and encouraging sign of the strength of Catholic-Jewish relations. Moreover, the accompanying program proved that today this dialogue must always include other religions, too, first and foremost Islam."
