MJLC extends its warmest congratulations and heartfelt best wishes to our Co-Chair, Mufti Prof. Dr Nedžad Grabus, on his election on 10 October 2026 as Reisul-ulema of the Islamic Community in Bosnia and Herzegovina.
The title of Reisul-ulema denotes the highest religious office within the Islamic Community in Bosnia and Herzegovina. Entrusted with the leadership of the Community, the Reisul-ulema bears a responsibility that extends beyond the guidance of the faithful: to uphold the integrity of the institution, serve its members and nurture the bonds of faith and belonging that endure across national boundaries. The Islamic Community encompasses Bosnia and Herzegovina, Serbia, Croatia and Slovenia, as well as Bosniak Muslim communities throughout the diaspora.
Throughout his distinguished career, Reisul-ulema Grabus has brought together theological scholarship, institutional leadership and a steadfast commitment to interreligious understanding. During his fifteen years as Mufti of Ljubljana and President of the Islamic Community in the Republic of Slovenia, he played a leading role in the realization of the Islamic Religious and Cultural Centre in Ljubljana, home to Slovenia’s first mosque. Appointed Mufti of Sarajevo in 2021, he continued to contribute to the religious and public life of Bosnia and Herzegovina, including through his engagement in interreligious relations.
For MJLC, this appointment is an occasion both to celebrate a significant milestone in the life of our Co-Chair and to reflect on the enduring importance of the principles that unite our work. His engagement across religious traditions speaks to the value of patient relationship-building, mutual respect and the trust that grows when communities encounter one another with openness and a willingness to understand. In a Europe shaped by a rich plurality of faiths and histories, such commitments are indispensable to a future in which diversity becomes a source of shared strength rather than division.
At the heart of MJLC’s mission lies a conviction that difference need not become distance, and that understanding, when nurtured through sustained engagement and genuine cooperation, can become the foundation for lasting trust. It is through these quiet but consequential acts of connection that the dignity of each tradition is affirmed and the common good is advanced.
MJLC extends its sincere congratulations to Reisul-ulema Grabus and wishes him wisdom, strength and discernment as he assumes this distinguished responsibility.
May his tenure be marked by meaningful service to the communities entrusted to his care, by the flourishing of mutual understanding, and by the strengthening of those bonds across faiths through which peace, dignity and respect can endure.
